my UNMATA necklace.
Everything else I can replace over time. But my UNMATA Necklace!!!!!!!
It was taken in San Francisco.
Here's what I'm thinking...This is a powerful piece of jewelry and it may show itself so I can find it. I figure I have a few hundred people on my side in the city that know the necklace or the symbol.
Please keep your eyes open and if you see one, it's mine. Offer to buy the necklace from whoever for whatever it costs and I will reimburse.
Please, I know she is trying to show up somewhere for me.

You'll get to work at your own pace, wear whatever you like, and be encouraged to find the beauty of the dance in your own way.

I absolutely believe in the spirituality of belly dancing, and see it the way it was meant to be seen- a beautiful act that praises life and strengthens women's bodies.

The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

Wear comfortable yoga clothes or dress up for each lesson- it’s up to you!

The schedule is absolutely flexible, and I will do my best to work out a time that works best for you- lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours- again, it's up to you! The price will vary as to how long you want your lesson to be. To give you an idea, an hour-long lesson will be $15. However, trades can be made and I can always knock down the price if you need it. My goal is to inspire you and help you find belly dance as wonderful as I do.

The festival will go on until June 29th: sixteen guest artists from various countries will animate the city from early morning to late at night, taking turns in a dense calendar of jams, performances and concerts, intensive workshops, encounters and laboratories centered around the theme of Contact Improvisation, improvisation dance and the performing arts.
Zipfest is a lively kermis with internationally famous guest artists invited to the Umbrian residence from various countries to collaborate in the creative production of events, promoting the identification of a trans-cultural art. The festival is an event of art and culture speaking the language of today, questioning itself on the processes or artistic interaction, creating contacts and occasions for cooperation among the guest artists, who bare their experience, affinities and cultural and generational differences in Orvieto, to create the festival together.

International scene 2008
Nita Little (www.nitalittle. com), American pioneer of Contact Improvisation, an internationally acclaimed artist, invited to Italy for the first time in April in the residenza dinamica of Palazzo Caravajal, for the project Restless Peace, and once more present in June as part of the Zipfest guest artists. Keith Hennessy, a Canadian performer with countless awards, for the first time in Italy, will present an interesting workshop in which improvisation dance, performance and shamanism will be put in relation to each other. Giorgio Convertito, an eclectic Italian dancer who has been living in Helsinki for six years, and is today an artist on the Finnish scene, Jacky Miredin the virtuoso French performer previously invited to Zipfest07 and the young Italian choreographer Sara Simeoni, currently dancing with Carolyn Carlson. The artistic director of the festival, Rossella Fiumi, takes part with her installation titled I'm All Ears, a forum on the theme of listening and communication in contemporary creativity.Jens Biedermann, a Swiss acrobatic dancer and accordion player, Adalisa Menghini, Italian choreographer who has been living in Berlin for years, Alessia Scala a young Neapolitan dancer, Isabelle Uski, Contact improviser from Grenoble, Gionatan Surrenti Italian dancer, improvisor and pedagogue, previously invited to several Zipfest editions, Yanaël Plumet French performer and traveler currently living in Istanbul, the musician and performer Michele Rabbia virtuoso percussionist invited to the preceding editions of the festival and particularly beloved by the Zip public, Marko Timlin Finnish sound artist proposing new modes in the field of electronic sound, composing and improvising on solar panels and Barnaby O'Rorke Tree, a versatile Scotch performer, improviser-cellist, composer and vocalist.

24-28 June Performances, concerts, forum
One of the most eagerly awaited events in Zipfest calendar, the improvisation performances: instant compositions, proposed then and here by the guest artists, in a type of performance called Real Time Composition.

Heart-felt curves
It is a great honor to present and pay homage to Luigi Mario, known also as Engaku Taino, a Zen master who has been living in the hinterland of Orvieto for many years. He is a fascinating figure with proficiencies and preparation of alpine skiing and rock climbing, as well as a Tai Chi Chuan guru, but above all a person to meet and know to practice meditation. Luigi Mario has been invited to the festival for two reasons: the first is to lead, aided by assistants, a free climbing session on the rocks of Ferentillo, a splendid zone in Umbria-Valnerina, on June 23rd. It is a unique occasion for those who practice Contact as well as others, because it gives one a chance to find out what it's like trying one's hand at a height of 30 meters, using one's strength, resistance, balance, gravity, weight, feeling of the void, and any number of other emotions to explore. The second reason is purely contemplative: three meetings of Tai Chi Chuan and meditation.
Amara (not of Urban Tribal) will be teaching 2 workshops in San Diego
May 4

12:30-2:30
Workshop I - Dynamic Combinations for Any Kind of Music

Amara will drill a series of short combinations focusing on strength, flexibility, balance, isolation, and layering. Then we will rework the combinations by changing their speed, size, and quality (gooey, sharp, and shimmies) in order to assist in our visual presentation of any kind of music.
These combinations and exercises can be applied to create both choreographies and improvisations.

2:45-4:45
Workshop II - Fusion Techniques
Amara takes a unique approach to this emerging form as she presents techniques and tools on how to create Fusion with ANY dance form. Learn the differences between sequential and simultaneous fusion concepts, explore where to find various dance elements to fuse, and discuss issues of when and why to fuse.
Fusion is a great way to add to your current vocabulary, foster creativity, and push your dancing to new heights.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels and all dance forms.
Deb' Workshop: Engaging the Core: Slow and Slinky
12:00-2:00
Dive into a jar of molasses! In this workshop, we will deepen our slow, ooey-gooey moves to achieve that slinky, sultry, intoxication look and feel of Tribal Bellydance. Drawing from yoga, pilates, feldenkrais, and Deb’s personal ‘stash”, this workshop will focus on core integration, spinal articulation, and building the foundational strength and flexibility in the hips, spine, and shoulders to directly support controlled, snake-like dancing; create ‘floating upper body’ dance posture for stage; and enage in healthy backbending and lay-backs to save your low back. All this will be applied to bellydance technique, and juicy fusion combos and choreography. She has often been coined the ‘Queen of slink”. Come learn Deb’s unique tribal stylization.

Rose's Workshop:
2:30-4:30
Rocking the Core
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. We will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements, great for any style of belly dance. This exciting Tribal Fusion workshop will include Rose's signature Core Integration material focused on building flexibility and targeted muscle group conditioning to improve your dancing. You will also learn a short choreography that highlights Rose's dynamic approach to contemporary belly dance.

Deb and Rose will both be available for private lessons while they are in San Diego. Please email info@tribalsdstyle.com to reserve a spot.
Instructors:
Ava Fleming:
With her extensive knowledge and experience in international dance
styles, Ave Fleming brings a truly unique and modern approach to the
belly dance community.L ocated in Phoenix, Arizona, her teaching and
performances throughout the Southwestern region have created quite a
demand for her practice of Raks Sharqi. Her focus on isolations and
music interpretation has captivated audiences here in the U.S. and
abroad. As the director, choreographer, and creator of the Black Opal
Dance Company, audiences have had the opportunity to see her creative
dance style amplified by ten. Ava's 2004 Belly Dancer of
the Universe title (Egyptian category) has only furtherd her popularity
with all who have seen her dance. Ava's instructional and performance
dvds have inspired and challenged many who have taken on the task of
studying her elegant example of the modern belly dancer through which
novices and
masters alike will gain challenge and insight

Kami Liddle:
Kami's style is what she calls a modern fsuion of an ancient dance.
Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various
styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop,
jazz, and bhangra dance. Kami performs both as a solo artist and also
collaborates wh iotther dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo,
directed by Rachel Brice, and has also worked with Samatha Riggs of Boom
Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the
company. Kami was nominated for "Best Kept Secret" and "Best
interpretive Artist" for 2005
Zaghareet Magazine and won the title "Entertainer of the Year 2005" at
the Wiggles of the West. Kami currently tours with The Bellydance
Superstars.

Samantha Riggs:
Samantha Riggs is the Founder, Artistic Director, Choreographer and Lead
Dancer for bothB oom Boom Bollywood and The Sexy Scallywags Pirate
Circus in Tempe, Arizona, and is a performer with Fyrae fire arts
troupe. She was the assistant director as well as a core dancer,
teacher, musician and choreographer Dfoorm ba Tribal Fusion Dance Troupe
(winners of the 2006 Zaghareet "Best Troupe" award) from 1996 until
their dissolution in October of 2006. Samantha has traveled the world
teaching Bollywood Style Dance, Tribal Style Bellydance, Tribal Fusion,
Fire Arts and Pirate Bellydance. Her serious obsession with Bollywood
movies has, over the years, infected others... leading to her higher
goal of connection and understanding between the Western and the Ind-Ao
merican communities. Samantha has a long history on stage withm any
other forms of theatre arts including fire performance, stage combat,
acting, stand-up comedy and comedy improv, singing, drumming and folk
dancing .

12-4:30 (four hour workshop plus break)
Skillet of Snakes
day one delivers combinations for quicker tempos. using combinations in improvisational dance is a good way to keep your head whilst striving for variety and contrast. movements will be broken down and drilled. combinations will be joined together to form a short, original choreography. some belly dance experience highly recommended.

Sunday, Feb 17, 2008
Dance Place San Diego, Studio 105 (across from Studio 107)
2650 Truxtun Road, San Diego, CA 92106
12-4:30
The sweet and low down.
another day another dance, but today drops itself into a jar of molasses. mardi presents combinations borne out of her slow-dancin bag of tricks. new movements are introduced, as well as new takes on some basic slower moves in the tribal repertoire. some belly dance experience highly recommended.

On line payment is available at http://mardilovetribalsdstyle.eventbrite.com Pre-registration is highly recommended. These workshops will sell out.
An art of stolen glances
So little dance is readily available, live or recorded, that we're grateful for what we have. Hello, YouTube.
By Lewis Segal
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/arts/la-ca-dvd-dance6jan06,1,6996543.story?track=rss&ctrack=1&cset=true

January 6, 2008

AIN'T nothin' like the real thing, baby. That's the cry of those in the arts world, arts journalism and educational dance who view the growing library of dance on DVD with disdain.

For them, the scale of live performances and an art based on three-dimensional movement in space can only be degraded by even the highest-tech DVD transcriptions of stage events. A flat, minuscule reduction of dance just isn't dance, they say with a sneer. Can we really understand and appreciate the Sistine Chapel from a postcard?

Of course, these detractors do make an exception for anything conceived for celluloid or magnetic tape: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly and his umbrella, Moira Shearer and her red shoes, plus dance documentaries and all those experimental collaborations between choreographers and videographers that turn up each year in the Dance Camera West festival. Those are real films, cinema, an art in itself.

"Dance for Camera 2," a sampling of seven short films, arrives this week from First Run Features ( www.firstrunfeatures.com). It includes pieces in which virtuoso dancing is matched by virtuoso camerawork (e.g., director Kathy Prosser's "Horses Never Lie"), a sex-war duet that ends and depends on the kind of engulfing, realistic flood impossible in a stage piece (Reynir Lyngdal's "Burst"), a solo that makes a child's ordinary movement look heroic (Rosemary Lee's "Boy") and a sly parody of medical documentaries that incorporates dancers but is not essentially movement-driven (Mitchell Rose's "Case Studies From the Groat Center for Sleep Disorders").

These films are all excellent, and the dancing in them needs no apologies. But it would be hard to claim that the greatest dancers or choreographers of the age are represented. So they're almost beside the point for the dance audience as a whole. And so is the argument that dance created or reinterpreted for the film or video camera is the only legitimate dance on DVD.

In any case, contradictions inevitably arise when this hard-line position is invoked. Mikhail Baryshnikov dancing excerpts from "Giselle" in "The Turning Point" and "Dancers" can be considered acceptable because those are feature films. But not Mikhail Baryshnikov dancing the complete "Giselle" as taped by PBS for the "Live From Lincoln Center" TV series and subsequently issued on home video -- that's a "mere" record of a theatrical performance. So what if he's great in it and Natalia Makarova (Giselle) even greater? Ain't nothin' like the real thing . . . .

The argument against reprocessed stage events might be reasonable if we lived in a world of infinite choices where dance is concerned: live dance versus DVD dance, live Baryshnikov versus video Baryshnikov. But even New Yorkers don't live in that world, and in Los Angeles, our pleasure in dance and even our dance literacy are compromised by everything that we can't see in the flesh. And the need to know more and especially see moreof this art overrides the rather simplistic perceptual issues raised to demean DVD dance.

Although there's a growing list of contemporary companies and choreographers showcased on DVD, I will focus here on ballet, because in America that art has been misrepresented and arguably stifled by tour presenters and venues focused on a short list of antique solid-gold titles.

You know the routine: A foreign company is told that if it builds an audience through one or two U.S. tours of "Swan Lake," "Giselle" and possibly "Don Quixote" or "La Bayadère," then it can dance its own original work, maybe. But by the time the company finds out that there will be no "then" and no "maybe," the tour presenters are off offering another company the same shuck and jive.

Until that situation changes, we need dance on DVD to show us the true range of international ballet in the 21st century. Right now, the Paris Opera Ballet is widely regarded as the greatest classical ensemble anywhere, not only because of its pristine academic dancing but because of its mastery of the most idiosyncratic contemporary choreography. However, it tours once in a blue moon and then never in the repertory that most excites audiences in its home city -- at least never on Southland stages.

Its DVDs allow us to measure that repertory against what we know of such relatively familiar visitors as American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet. At one extreme are the mostly corrupt Paris editions of 19th century classics. But we can also view works by such major living choreographers as Mats Ek and John Neumeier commissioned by the Parisians.

What's more, for those more interested in star dancers than repertory, there's a whole world of virtuosity on DVD that you won't often find at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion or the Orange County Performing ArtsCenter. For example, the greatest male star in international ballet during the past decade has arguably been Cuba's Carlos Acosta, but he's danced only once in Southern California -- a long time ago in a secondary role in the Houston Ballet "Dracula." What he can do and why he's become the embodiment of state-of-the-art classical prowess simply aren't part of our consciousness. Unless, that is, we turn to DVD performances with England's Royal Ballet or to YouTube (more on that institution shortly).

Similarly, Svetlana Zakharova (the Kirov Ballet's gift to the Bolshoi) has never appeared in Southern California, so to keep up with her growing status as one of this generation's reigning prima ballerinas, we must turn to DVD performances with her home company and with La Scala Ballet, where she has forged a memorable partnership with Roberto Bolle, another stellar Southland no-show (though that may change this year).

Digital enters the picture

THE newest factor in the growth of video dance is technological: all those digital cameras no bigger than a credit card that can record an hour's worth of acceptable video on a memory chip no bigger than a postage stamp. Many of them now feature optical stabilization, stereo sound and low-light clarity.

So when commercial DVD producers don't provide performances by the current crop of bravura dancers or the rep buzzed about on every blog, dance fans now have the means as well as the incentive to do it themselves, posting their footage on YouTube or circulating their shoots via homemade DVDs.

It's all illegal, of course -- photographing and circulating choreography and performances without permission. But it isn't the same thing as duping a copy of "The Bourne Ultimatum" or "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." Those DVDS are available for sale and rental. Performances by the phenomenal Cuban defector Rolando Sarabia aren't -- not aboveground -- and distributing unauthorized examples of his artistry takes nothing away from him.

Another new factor affecting video dance is the unstoppable proliferation of illegal YouTube postings (some of them very short-lived, though they're around long enough to be duped for private collections). Their existence and popularity seem to be bending copyright issues, pointing toward a use-it-or-lose-it definition of publication rights. That definition would make a copyright owner's failure-to-publish a kind of default, allowing a work to be up for grabs: everything out there from those tapes of CIA interrogations that Congress is seeking to any kind of stage performance when no official, authorized edition of the same material exists or will exist.

Two days ago, the dance division of the New York Public Library scheduled a three-way conversation between documentary filmmakers and a copyright attorney about the "fair use" provision of the copyright law -- and whether that provision can adequately serve the needs of film and video artists, educators, dancemakers, critics and audiences. But "fair use" may be less the issue than what might be called "fair access" when an art form is being inadequately documented.

It's a complex situation, and I don't want to seem to encourage illegal activity. But in the past, rock 'n' roll bootlegs added to the bedrock lore of the art, and some were eventually issued legitimately: evidence that commercial record producers should have been at those performances or sessions. Some important opera bootlegs (sound recordings, not videos) also gained legal status when rights were belatedly negotiated. And there are fans who have shot whole libraries of original-cast Broadway musicals, awaiting the day when they might be made available. In dance, piracy has multiplied as technology puts a video studio in anyone's coat pocket and as commercial producers continue to have a blind spot when it comes to certain major developments.

You can argue, for instance, that the one and only innovation in international ballet since the turn of the century has been the rediscovery of authentic choreography by Marius Petipa through the use of antique ballet notation by the Kirov Ballet (Petipa's company) and, more recently, a few others.

Petipa's choreography for "The Sleeping Beauty" and his collaboration with Lev Ivanov (his assistant) on "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker" are the prime classics of the ballet repertory, along with Petipa's "La Bayadère" and "Raymonda" and his adaptations of "Giselle," "Le Corsaire" and a few others.

But these ballets have been continually revised and abridged in the 98 years since Petipa's death, and only when the Kirov began a series of controversial reconstructions in the late 1990s did his complete, original movement texts become visible again to dancers, audiences, critics and ballet historians.

None of these groundbreaking reconstructions has ever been danced in Southern California, and none has yet been issued on DVD for the educational or home video market. So when commercial dance-video producers don't step up to the plate, here's your world of infinite choices: Be content with reading about these productions, fly to the handful of cities where the company performs them, or find a bootleg DVD -- of which there are many.

The latest reconstruction (premiered in April) is especially tantalizing because the ballet simply doesn't exist in living memory. It's a long mythological one-act titled "Le Réveil de Flore" (to music by Ricardo Drigo), dating from 1893 or '94 (sources differ), midway between "The Sleeping Beauty" and "Raymonda." D.I. Leshkov's authoritative 1922 monograph on Petipa says "it was considered to be a masterpiece of ballet in the anacreontic style."

"Anacreontic"? Think of Greek poems in praise of love and wine. And imagine a world of nymphs, satyrs, bacchants, fauns, gods of the woods and goddesses on pointe dancing in Petipa's most sumptuous manner in re-creations of the 19th century sets and costumes.

Obviously, we would all feel infinitely happier (and/or less guilty) if we could order "Le Réveil de Flore" from Amazon. But we can't. And even when experienced only on a bootleg DVD shot by a balletomane with plenty of guts and a steady hand, it's enchanting, as close to time travel as we're ever going to get. And face it: In the absence of a professional taping or a live performance, this contraband silver disc holds the essential experience of the work that we can obtain in no other way.

Yes, it's a flat, minuscule reduction, but if we invest our imaginations in the viewing, it can be thrilling. We all learned very early in our lives how to interpret patterns of light projected onto a movie screen or through a television tube and construct whole worlds from them. It takes no greater perceptual leap to project ourselves into a "mere" transcription of a stage performance, becoming part of the audience for that event.

My parrot, Stevie, lives in a cage near the TV set and so has seen more dance than many Southland balletomanes -- though he much prefers car chases, parades, game shows, hurricanes and the Iraq war. Early on, he reacted to sounds from the TV (including his own voice on home movies) but not to images. Lately, however, he seems to know what he's seeing and recognizes himself even with the sound turned off.

If he has learned to read pixels and get delight from them, maybe there's hope for those who debunk dance on DVD.

April 25–May 2 / 2008

Nita Little
Restless Peace
A mind in motion and Contact Improvisation experience
Residential project for experienced movers

The American performer Nita Little will be the special guest of our association, first time in Italy as guest artist, for giving the project “Restless Peace”. The intensive workshop with Nita Little is in the calendar of our Residential Projects 2008, and will be from April 25 to May 2, 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in middle Italy.

After the end of the workshop, on May 3rd and 4th, the association will plan also two days with the International Springfest Jam.

The intensive workshop and the Jam will be held both at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli, in Orvieto.

Application for registration in the project with Nita Little is open from January 7th. For information and more details write to: info@contactfestival.it, or telephone to +39 0763.341479.

Nita Little
Restless Peace
The urge to move, to go where we have never been, is the soul of our practice in this workshop.
Developing a "home base", a place of personal and creative safety is as important as the journey; how wonderful to be free when you have a home! We learn, how like nomads, we may carry our home with us, even as we track paths in and out of unfamiliar territory.
We focus on developing the mental, emotional, and physical skills that enable dancers to travel creatively. Utilizing a full dance vocabulary, we integrate gestured movement improvisation with contact improvisation and build the skills to consciously weave these two forms.

We investigate “states” of mind / “states” of body as a means to develop and direct creative work in our improvisations. Developing the ability to describe and craft subtle levels of action and experience, we boost our physical potential while increasing our readability. Moving in solo, duet and group forms, we gain compositional tools for structural orientation; like torches, they light the way.

This workshop is developed for experienced movers who wish to pass beyond the threshold of old patterns. The restless human drive that takes us out of comfort, urges us to meet the unfamiliar, to move into, through and with the unknown, is a dance artist’s call. Here, we harness that drive and discover how, moving at the speed of our restless calling, we can find peace.

This class culminates in a creative work for performance at the workshop and at Zipfest08.

Things we will do:
Go deep into the physical philosophy behind contact improvisation.
Learn underlying CI principles that manifest as pathways of action.
Build the tools for safe physical and creative relationships
Discover different spatial orientations: vertical/hierarchical and horizontal/diffuse.
Learn about our temporal orientation and develop tools that modulate time.
Develop the skills to be able to move freely between states of mind.
Deepen our agreements to open to life, to the dance.
Honor peace.

about Nita Little
www.nitalittle.com
Nita Little has been developing, choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact Improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others.
She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world, who are themselves now master dancers and teachers: Gretchen Spiro, Andrew Harwood, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Julie Oak, Peter Bingham to name just a few. Through CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind body relationship. Since 1981 she has been developing an evolving curriculum called The Mind in Motion, which explores the range of experiential states along the mind-body continuum and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as other movement forms. This work is informed by her investigation of the mind through work such as hypnotherapy and NeuroLinguistic Programming.

As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. While anchored in process, it frequently explores character, story, and concept.

Nita received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in choreography and was on the California Arts Council Touring Program.
The latter award was to her solo dance company, NITA LITTLE DANCE THEATRE, which she began in 1984, continued through 1990, and reinstated as a pickup company in 2000. In 2002 Nita created Playing God, an hour-long dance opera that received funding through the Dance USA /National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.

Nita teaches and performs yearly at national and international dance festivals including ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, the International Contact Festival Freiburg, Germany, the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California.
She also teaches locally and nationally throughout the year. She lives with her son in Santa Cruz Mountains in California.

As she has pioneered a path in the understanding of the mind/body/spirit relationship, Nita's mission, conscious evolution, has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body.

Male Belly Dancing Makes Comeback in Egypt, Defying Suppression
Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Farid Mesbaah, male belly dancer, hopped on a car in Cairo's Shobra district and strutted his stuff.
He clanged metal castanets, magically converted his hips into pistons and twirled his head around like a centrifuge. The crowd at tables lining a dirt alley clapped rhythmically. Young men in jeans jumped up to wiggle along.
Mesbaah was performing at the opening of the Old-Time Moon Cafe, a gig that -- along with weddings, birthdays, night clubs and circumcisions -- is typical for belly dancers. Untypical, at least in recent years, are performances by men.
Male belly dancing, a centuries-old Egyptian tradition, is making a comeback -- against the odds, considering its periodic suppression by government and religious officials. The problem for Mesbaah is that his craft has long been associated with homosexuality -- a taboo in Egypt.
``I just like to dance,'' says Mesbaah, who has seven children. ``It's very sensual. I've been doing it since I was little.''
Mesbaah is shimmying in a society that has long struggled with ever-changing limits of social tolerance. A carved relief at a pharaonic-era tomb near Cairo shows today's dance prohibitions were yesterday's norm. It depicts a chorus line of men at a religious festival; each wears a sash knotted on his left hip, a fashion for dancing men and women that lingers today.
Ghawazee Banned
Male performers were once considered more reputable than females. In his book ``The Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians,'' Edward William Lane, an Englishman and prominent Arabic scholar who lived in 19th-century Cairo, observed that male dancers were preferred by Cairenes who thought women ``ought not to expose themselves.'' From 1834 to 1849, women dancers, known as ghawazee, were banned from the city.
Rakia Hassan, 62, a retired dancer, recalls that in her childhood, males peddled their skills along with women on Muhammed Ali Street, then a one-stop shop for belly-dancer hires.
``It became a business like any other, and men were part of it,'' she says. ``You know, Egyptians love to dance -- boys, girls, whatever -- so it was not unusual. However, Islamic trend has made it more difficult for the men.''
Monarchical Decadence
During the reign of Gamal Abdul Nasser, male belly dancing all but disappeared because it smacked of monarchical decadence. Nasser took over Egypt in 1954, two years after King Farouk was overthrown by military officers.
No one knows the number of male -- or for that matter, female -- dancers now. There is no belly-dance association, an indication of the profession's seedy reputation. (Belly dance is a Western term invented by the French; Egyptians call it simply Oriental or ``homegrown'' dance.)
Male dancing, along with officially proscribed activities such as open prostitution and smoking hashish, goes on in some nightclubs. Mahmoud Karim, 20, who dances in discos along Pyramids Street, says he pretends to be an enthusiastic customer but actually gets paid by clubs to perform.
``Just in case someone objects, the owner says I'm an amateur,'' he says.
Tolerance for male dance doesn't mean tolerance for homosexuality -- even among the dancers, who have been known for at least 150 years by an Arabic word, khawal, that's become insulting slang for gay men.
Dance-Hall Raid
Gay life is dangerous in Cairo, where plainclothes police are on the lookout for hustlers on the streets. In 2001, police raided the Queen Boat, a floating dance hall, and arrested 52 men for ``debauchery'' and ``perverting religion.''
``I'm careful not to look like I'm seducing customers,'' Karim says.
Tito Seif, a well-known belly dancer whose performances are available for viewing on YouTube, dances only in the galabiyah, a slack caftan, never in anything revealing.
``I don't believe that a male belly dancer should imitate a woman,'' says Seif, 35. ``We should not forget we are men and dance in a manly way.''
He says he will leave Egypt to dance abroad because the current crop of male dancers ``is giving us a bad reputation.''
Samia Allouba, 45, a belly-dance instructor, admires male dancers -- to a point. ``Definitely, they can move,'' she says. ``As long as they don't try to imitate women. That I find disgusting.''
`More With Our Muscles'
Mesbaah jokes that women dancers are jealous of the men. ``We can do more with our muscles,'' he says. He turned his passion into a profession 10 years ago after ending a career as a metal worker.
When performing, he is on the lookout for possible hostility. ``If I think the audience is unfriendly, I just leave,'' he says.
He dresses in loose black trousers and T-shirt; no pantaloons, vests or skirts recalling the khawal past. The only accessory linking him to belly-dance dress is the waist scarf.
His family accepts his profession, except for an older brother who, Mesbaah says, is a devout Muslim and has stopped talking to him.
``Some people think it's forbidden, but we Egyptians like to have fun,'' he says.
Still, Mesbaah says he has refused to dance on film because it might hurt the marriage chances of his three daughters. He also doesn't want any of his four sons to follow in his steps.
``I'd like them to do something else,'' he says. ``Be better than me.''
